Dallas native Errol Spence, Jr., defeated his Brazilian opponent, Ribeiro de Carvalho, by a count of 16-10 to advance to the round of 16 in the men’s welterweight boxing division. He will face K. Vikas of India, the No. 3 seeded boxer, in his next bout. Lightweight Jose Ramirez, from California, won the first two rounds on points and performed well enough in the third to advance as well, defeating Frenchman Rachid Azzedine, 21-20.
Yesterday, American middleweight Terrell Gausha, from Cleveland, beat his Armenian opponent when the referees stopped the match in the second round. California bantamweight Joseph Diaz, Jr., defeated Pavlo Ishchenko from the Ukraine 19-9.
Women’s boxing will make its Olympic event debut one week from today.
