American University School of Public Affairs Graduate Thesis

Please click here to view my original graduate thesis, “For God and Country: An Examination Of Civil Religion And God Strategy As Values Frames In American Presidential Discourse Since 1960.”

“For God and Country” examines the theoretical applications of an American civil religion and a proposed “God Strategy” as framing devices in presidential inaugural addresses from Kennedy (1960) to Obama (2009).

American civil religion is effectively, according to scholars, the mythology of the United States of America and its battles, wars, founding documents and political and spiritual leaders, among other factors. “God Strategy” is the employment of actual religious references in political campaign communication.

My observations, building off research by other scholars, identifies that, over time, American presidents have employed both of these concepts as devices to frame the discussion of the most important issues in the eyes of the electorate at the time of the preceding election; effectively, presidents have appealed for the support of the American public on mission critical policy areas by using references to God and American mythology.
